Understanding Maths Year 3 Advanced (Australian Curriculum Edition 2025)

Understanding Maths – Advanced Level is a series of mathematics books with content aligned to the F–10 Australian Mathematics Curriculum (v9.0). The content is designed to enable students to achieve the required student outcomes and is organised into the six Strands:

1. Number
2. Algebra
3. Measurement
4. Space
5. Statistics
6. Probability

The Advanced Level books provide content to meet required outcomes. In addition, the majority of the content in each book, is beyond the expected Stage or Year levels. It is assumed students using the Advanced Level books have an outstanding knowledge of concepts in mathematics, are very confident students and have high level problem solving skills.

Key Features of the Advanced Level books

• The content of each book is divided into convenient learning sections within the Strands.
• The student outcomes outlined in the F–10 Australian Mathematics Curriculum (v9.0) are provided for each Strand. The content in the learning sections of the Advanced Level books give students maximum opportunity to achieve at a higher level than these outcomes. These books provide teachers, parents and tutors with an outstanding resource to support talent development in mathematics.
• The content in the Advanced Level books is designed for students achieving at beyond Year expectations with an excellent knowledge and understanding of required concepts. Successful completion of the Standard book for a particular Year is highly recommended. There is the provision of a range of opportunities to engage students and identify their particular learning interests in mathematics. There is also high level value in providing students with opportunities to interact with other students with similar interests and ability.
• Graded assessments in the Advanced Level books are more difficult and extensive. The more challenging material includes more problem solving tasks which go beyond the particular Year or Stage level.
• Detailed and clear explanations support learning and result in high levels of understanding. Each page provides clarity by specifically covering one idea or rule with at least one fully worked example. This is particularly useful as teachers aim to extend their students in mathematics.
• Included in each graded assessments at the end of each section is page referencing for students to refer back to if required. The detailed assessment tasks ensure students are widely assessed in order to receive extensive feedback.
• Solutions at the back of the book are clearly provided. The large number of pages given to solutions ensures quick referencing for teachers and students.
• An additional section, ‘Money and Maths’ has been provided to enhance learning. It is a very practical section outlining the money system in Australia and its relevance to the lives of students.
• Each formula, rule or set of steps is highlighted in larger print for students to enhance their learning. Students are able to efficiently refer back to previous topics as required.
